Celebrex Warning

On December 23, 2004, the FDA urged doctors to limit prescribing Celebrex. The FDA was concerned of recent evidence that the drug may increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Celebrex is manufactured by Pfizer. Another arthritis drug manufactured by Pfizer has come under scrutiny by the FDA and healthcare professionals. Doctors also have been encouraged to limit the use of Bextra until the FDA can complete a more thorough evaluation of the drug's safety. Both Celebrex and Bextra came under scrutiny following the Vioxx recall.

Many physicians believe that all drugs designated as Cox-2 Inhibitors are prone to significant heart risks. The problems that plagued Vioxx and led to its eventual recall may also exist with Celebrex. If you or a loved one has been injured as a result of Celebrex, we encourage you to contact us.

Study Links Celebrex to Elevated Risk of Heart Attack, Stroke

On December 17, 2004, Pfizer released results from a study that showed Celebrex more than doubled the risk of heart attack and stroke among patients participating in the survey. Faced with troubling news regarding the safety of Celebrex, Pfizer nonetheless stressed that they have no intentions of removing the drug from the market. Instead, the company simply will stop marketing the potentially dangerous drug.

The warning did not come as a surprise to some physicians. Following the recall of Vioxx in September 2004, a drug similar to Celebrex, many in the healthcare industry expected news of Celebrex problems were inevitable. The FDA has stepped up investigation into the safety of all Cox-2 Inhibitors, including Celebrex.
